What is an echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is a simple and safe ultrasound test that uses sound waves to create moving images of your heart. It helps assess the heart’s structure, how well it is pumping, how the valves are working, and how blood flows through the heart.
It is non-invasive and does not use radiation, making it a safe and reliable way to investigate a wide range of heart conditions.
Why might your doctor refer you?
Common reasons for referral
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Palpitations
- High blood pressure
- Heart murmur
Ongoing monitoring
An echocardiogram may also be used to monitor known heart disease, valve problems, heart muscle weakness, fluid around the heart, and other structural abnormalities.
