About HIV Care

Approximately 25,000 Australians are living with HIV. Over the past 20 years, significant progress has been made in HIV treatment, allowing many people diagnosed today to live long, healthy, and fulfilling lives with modern medications that are often as simple as taking a single, well-tolerated tablet each day.

At Bellbird Medical Centre, our doctors provide confidential, respectful, and supportive HIV care tailored to each patient’s individual needs. Modern HIV Treatment

Modern HIV medications are highly effective at controlling the virus and protecting long-term health. With regular monitoring and ongoing medical care, many people living with HIV maintain an undetectable viral load and continue to lead active, healthy lives.

The PARTNER study, which observed no HIV transmissions after 58,000 condom-less sexual contacts between HIV-positive patients with an undetectable viral load and their HIV-negative partners, helped establish the important concepts of:

This means that people living with properly treated HIV who maintain an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit the virus to their partners.

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a preventive medication used by people who do not have HIV but may be at increased risk of exposure. When taken correctly, PrEP significantly reduces the risk of acquiring HIV. PrEP is now available on the PBS and is typically taken as a once-daily tablet. Doctors at Bellbird Medical Centre are able to prescribe PrEP and provide advice regarding suitability, testing requirements, and ongoing monitoring.
