What happens during the test?

Cervical Screening Test

You will be asked to remove clothing from your upper body, and a gown will be provided.

Heart rhythm monitoring

A cardiac sonographer places ECG stickers on your chest to monitor your heart rhythm.

Scanning position

For most of the test, you will lie on your left side while images are taken.

Ultrasound imaging

A water-based gel is applied to the chest and a handheld ultrasound probe is used to capture moving images of the heart.

Change for the scan

What is an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram is simple and safe ultrasound test that uses sound waves to create moving images of your heart. It helps assess the heart’s structure, how well it is pumping, how the valves are taking and how blood flows through the heart.

Ongoing monitoring

An echocardiogram may be used to monitor known heart disease, valve problems, heart muscle weakness, fluid around the heart and other structural anomalies.

Typical appointment time: A standard echocardiogram usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes.
